Battlestar Galactica primer:
Okay, there are 12 different colonies of humans on 12 planets. The colonists worship the Lords of Kobol. They created the Cylons to do inconvenient chores, like mining and such. The Cylons rebelled. ("They made us work for too long, for unreasonable hours!") There was a long war and then a truce was called so the Cylons could gather their resources to really exterminate the humans. They developed Cylons that look like humans, called "skinjobs," to infiltrate the colonial defenses. One, (or I should say Six) became the lover of Dr. Gaius Baltar and got access to security defense codes. The Cylons launched nuclear warheads at all Colonial cities, wiping out all but a ragtag group of refugees who managed to escape and join one of the Battlestars that was left, the Galactica. Commander Adama and President Laura Roslin are the leaders and they decide to look for a mythical 13 colony that went to Earth. The Cylons have a plan. We don't know what it is, yet, but they are also looking for Earth. It can't be good.
Gaius Baltar is completely vain and self-absorbed and he has been, by turns, a Cylon detector, vice president, president, and now, religious mystic. Ever since the destruction of Caprica, he has had visions/hallucinations of Six, who helps him weasel his way into positions of power and influence, though he is generally despised by the rest of the cast. Quizzically, he is the only human left who speaks with a British accent (I think). He is awesome.
Starbuck, Kara Thrace, is the hotshot pilot who fights and fraks with equal gusto. She has complicated relationships with everyone. As the series progresses, she learns she is the chosen one to find Earth, so she is obsessed with that.
